YOGA / THE BODY IN BALANCE

A steadier body.
A quieter mind.

Yoga reaches beyond the mat. At Ananda Marga, postures are part of a complete way of life that brings physical practice together with meditation and service.

Begin gently, with room to learn at your own pace. Our indoor classes welcome newcomers as well as people returning to practice.

More than
a posture.

The Sanskrit word asana describes a posture that offers physical ease and mental composure. A pose is something to inhabit with attention, rather than an achievement to display.

In Ananda Marga's traditional teaching, asanas help prepare the mind for meditation. The teaching connects their effects on the glands, nerves, muscles and internal organs with emotional balance and concentration.

A small, attentive practice can become a pause in an otherwise hurried day. Bring your attention to the movement, the breath and the moments of stillness between postures.

Movement with
meaning.

The centre's traditional explanation of asanas includes:

  • Flexibility and relaxation of muscles and nerves.
  • Support for breathing, blood and lymph circulation.
  • Gentle pressure and movement around the internal organs.
  • A relationship between glandular activity, hormonal balance and the mind.

Meet your practice with curiosity. The shape of a posture matters less than an attentive, comfortable approach to it.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Make space for
your practice.

Settle first

Practise when your body is calm and cool, without a full stomach. Give yourself a moment to arrive before beginning.

Choose a clear space

Use a clean, comfortably warm indoor room with smoke-free air. Allow enough room to move without obstruction.

Learn with a teacher

The centre advises practising asanas under qualified guidance. In this tradition, non-meditation postures are paused during pregnancy and menstruation; ask your teacher about suitable practice.

How does Tantra Yoga relate to Hatha Yoga?

Our Tantra approach combines postures and massage with mental practice, relaxation and beginner meditation. Classes also introduce guided visualisation and an approach to health informed by naturopathy.

The emphasis is on bringing the body and mind into practice together. Alongside movement, there is space for attention, reflection and rest.

Is this different from Astaunga Yoga?

No. We practise Astaunga Yoga. Beginners explore part of this wider system; advanced learning covers its other limbs. Meditation instruction and advice are free.
